The Space2Waves project has identified Australia, Canada, South Africa and the UAE as target markets for the project. Read on for an overview of each of the markets.

Australia

Australia is a relative newcomer to the space sector, with the creation of the Australian Space Agency in 2018. It is proving to have high ambitions for the growth of the sector, with the goal of doubling the size of the sector and creating 20,000 additional jobs by 2030.

The sector benefits from real support from the federal government.

Earth observation is part of the National Civil Space Priority Areas set forth in the 2021-2030 Communications Technologies and Services roadmap. The application potential for blue growth is enormous, as Australia possesses the third largest EEZ in the world.

Specific sectors of interest include maritime surveillance, both at the borders and for aquaculture, as well as integration into port infrastructures.

Canada

Canada is a long-standing member of the international space community. The Canadian Space Agency is a regular partner of NASA, and Canada is the only non-European country to be a member of the ESA.

With two RADARSAT constellations dedicated to Earth Observation and a recently closed funding program for earth observation applications development, support for the sector is significant and has already proved successful.

The blue economy is one of Canada's most important sectors: in 2018 it represented 36,114 million CAD, or about 1.6% of the national GDP. Within this scope, Earth Observation can bring potential solutions to several challenges:

* Developing arctic observation
* Predicting extreme weather events
* Pollution detection
* Illegal activities surveillance

South Africa

Although South Africa has a long history of involvement in the space sector, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) was only founded in 2010. SANSA has accumulated a significant amount of EO data, collated in the SANSA Earth Observation Online Catalogue.

In 2019, SANSA announced the future deployment of 4IR nanosatellites in a 'Maritime Domain Awareness Constellation.' This constellation will provide SANSA with valuable information on the South African EEZ, including vessel monitoring as a priority.

The blue economy has been identified as a priority of development for the South African economy. With the establishment of the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) in 2014, South Africa is reinforcing its blue economy skills and capacities. Aquaculture in particular has been identified as having significant growth potential.

Earth Observation can bring solutions to key issues such as vessel and environmental pollution monitoring.

United Arab Emirates

Although the UAE Space Agency was only created in 2014, it has already shown great ambition in its development, most notably with its successful Mars mission.

In terms of earth observation however the UAE is still in the process of developing its capacities. The MeznSat satellite was deployed by the UAE in 2020 and while its primary purpose is the monitoring of greenhouse gases, it also aims to detect algae blooms.

A second, more powerful earth observation satellite named the Arab Satellite 813 is being developed by the UAE with the cooperation of other Arab States.

The UAE is a strategic hub for maritime transport and logistics. With 12 commercial trading ports (excluding oil ports), the Emirates are looking for port management solutions. As awareness for environmental sustainability and the fragility of marine ecosystems grows, the UAE is seeking to preserve its coastal habitats. Earth Observation systems may provide monitoring and prevention solutions in this field.

'How Cultural differences matter' Space2Waves webinar

Space2Waves organised this interesting and useful webinar, 'How Cultural Differences Matter' which is available to view online.

The webinar dealt with the tools needed to prepare SME owners and their businesses for operating in unfamiliar business environments.

The presentation, available to view on YouTube, was presented by the CEO of Hofstede Insight, Egbert Schram. The webinar was organised by CUBE IN and NOVExport; 2 EU projects working on the internationalisation of SMEs.

Copernicus; dedicated to ocean observation and monitoring - Find out more

The Copernicus Marine Service (also referred to as CMEMS) is dedicated to ocean observation and monitoring.

Copernicus is funded by the European Commission (EC) and implemented by Mercator Ocean International, a centre for global ocean analysis and forecasting. https://www.copernicus.eu/en

Copernicus Marine provides regular and systematic reference information on the state of the physical and bio-geochemical ocean at the global and European regional scale.

It provides key inputs that support major EU and international policies and initiatives and can contribute to: combating pollution, marine protection, maritime safety and routing, sustainable use of ocean resources, developing marine energy resources, blue growth, climate monitoring, weather forecasting, and more.

Copernicus also aims to increase awareness amongst the general public by providing European and global citizens with information about ocean-related issues.

Space2Waves project in cooperation with the Galatea project and NOVExport project organised a webinar with Mercator Ocean International which aimed to present the Copernicus Marine Service and highlight it with two use-cases.

Two SMEs involved in Space2Waves were invited to introduce the product they had developed by using Copernicus data.

* Augusto SEPP, from CMCC s.r.l presented the Multi-scale CMEMS ocean products: the path towards fit-for-purpose oil spill forecasting

* Muriel LUX, Oceanographer at NOVELTIS introduced the service they developed "Coastal service dedicated to fishing, aquaculture and maritime safety in the Arctic".

UFO Project launches 2nd call for funding for projects using Smallsat, high altitude platforms or drones

The second UFO project call for proposals is now open. UFO is seeking collaborative projects (of 2 or more SMEs) to develop innovative products and services by integrating new embedded technology solutions in the Small Flying Objects (SFO) area eg Smallsats, Drones and High Altitude Platform systems, to support the six targeted Emerging Industries.

Participation is open to all SMEs based in one of the UFO partner countries (Bulgaria, France, Greece, Romania, United Kingdom).

The funding is up to Euro 60k per SME in project funding for:

* Feasibility Analysis
* Demonstration (Development and implementation of a product/service/solution)

Innovation boosted by Small Flying Objects:

The UFO project is dedicated to supporting European SMEs in developing innovative products and services by integrating new technological solutions and know-how provided by the combination of innovative Small Flying Objects (SFOs: drones, high altitude platform systems, small satellites etc), embedded nano and digital technologies, Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), data analysis and exploitation solutions.

Six emerging industries are particularly being targeted; mobility, environment, blue growth, finance and insurance, climate and digital and creative/gaming.

NOVExport second innovation acceleration programme launched

NOVExport is a European Project designed to increase the competitiveness of SMEs in the space and digital technologies sector, and to support their internationalization in Latin America’s agricultural, environmental and maritime markets.

The NOVExport project is offering interested companies the possibility to benefit from a three months Innovation Acceleration Programme.

The call is open from May 5th to July 30th, 2021 at 19.00 CET.

NOVExport will support companies from all sectors of activity, who intend to use the space and digital technologies from the following regions in South-West Europe:

* France: Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie
* Portugal: Norte, Centro, Lisboa, Alentejo, Algarve
* Spain: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Pais Vasco, Navarra, La Rioja, Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Cataluna, Comunidad de Madrid, Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucia, Murcia, Ceuta, Melilla, Islas Baleares.

The participation involves access to training, mentoring, commercial preparation and speed meetings to improve their innovation and internationalization capacities.

The selected companies will benefit from a complete Innovation Acceleration Programme, with access to online tools developed by the project, training to improve innovation methodology, ongoing mentoring, matchmaking opportunities, access to an international network of support and follow-up support.

The NOVExport Acceleration programme will have a duration of three months in two editions. Throughout this programme, the SMEs will receive training and coaching to manage advanced projects and operations in order to develop better products and services. The training will be conducted through webinar sessions, focusing on innovation and product development.

The sessions will be provided by local staff from the six different NOVExport's Hubs in France (Montpellier and Bayonne), Spain (Badajoz, Bilbao and Madrid) and Portugal (Coimbra).

A second opportunity to get financial support from GALATEA

GALATEA will be launching a second round of innovation Clubs and B2B meetings this September.

Four Innovation Clubs sessions will be organised, one for each GALATEA domain and its challenges, to encourage SMEs to develop innovative solutions to the challenges identified and to form cross-regional consortia.

GALATEA targets 4 areas of Blue Growth; Smart Port, Smart Ship, Smart Shipyard and Maritime Surveillance.

During each session, participants will be invited to collaborate following an innovative "design thinking" methodology to develop innovative ideas responding to the challenges emitted by GALATEA.

Afterwards, a B2B matchmaking event is planned to enable SMEs to meet and consolidate concrete partnerships.

The second Call for Vouchers will be launched in the autumn 2021.

BlueInvest Readiness Assistance opportunity

The BlueInvest Readiness Assistance is for high potential start-ups and SMEs with innovative and sustainable products and solutions for the Blue Economy.

Up to 200 businesses will be selected to receive coaching tailored specifically to their business objectives.

* Participants to the programme will receive feedback on their investment readiness level and a proposed coaching package.

* Each participant will be matched with a dedicated business coach, whom they will work with to develop a set of concrete business objectives.

* Participants will receive targeted assistance from their business coach, who will work with them to achieve their set objectives within a defined time-frame. The one-to-one coaching sessions will be conducted over a 3-month period, both in-person as well as digitally.

* Participants will also benefit from additional training through participant-only sessions organised at the BlueInvest Academy, networking and B2B matchmaking sessions at the BlueInvest events.

A competitive selection process will be used to select the best candidates for the BlueInvest Readiness Assistance.

DiT Funding for companies based in England

The DiT Internationalisation Fund aims to support SMEs in England to improve their international trade performance.

The Fund is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) running from December 2020 to early 2023.

Who can receive funding?

SMEs in England with the following characteristics:

* International High Growth Potential with prospects of employment growth or productivity improvement.
* A product or service suitable for international trade, or which could be developed for international trade and see international trade as a path for growth
* £500k+ sales/turnover (our target, but those with lower sales/turnover are eligible)

What funding is available?

* Co-investment funding between £1k and £9k - total amount of funding available varies in LEP areas
* Support tools are available to establish the amount of funding SME's can apply for
* The Fund Administrator will regularly update funding availability for each LEP area, this supports management of expectations for SME's and reduces the chance of over-committing funding.

How can SMEs apply?

SPACE-COMM Expo, 7th-8th July 2021, Farnborough, UK

This new trade exhibition focused on the commercialisation of space for business, defence and aerospace is set to drive growth across the UK space sector. Space-Comm Expo is taking place 7th-8th July 2021 at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre.

Australian Advancing Earth Observation Forum 2021-2022, 25th August 2021, online

The Advancing Earth Observation Forum has been created to enable everyone to actively engage, contribute, learn, and connect with others in the Australian EO community.

The AEO Forum is billed as a high-value experience for individuals, businesses, and organisations to build professional expertise, contribute to the collective national capabilities in support of our the Australian Space Agency, and also be an effective partner in the global "Space Industry".

The following changes have been made to the inaugural Advancing Earth Observation Forum in order to ensure a highly interactive forum:

1. AEO 2021 will now be a one-day fully online event on 25 August 2021

2. Building AEO Community activities will take place as a series of bi-monthly webinars from September 2021 to June 2022

3. The live and interactive Advancing Earth Observation Forum 2022 will take place in August 2022 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre
